Har Ghar Jal Scheme Achieves 81% Tap Water Coverage in Rural India: Centre

New Delhi, July 24: The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) under the Ministry of Jal Shakti has achieved a significant milestone in providing piped water access to rural India. According to data submitted in the Lok Sabha, as of July 21, 2025:

  • 15.67 crore rural households out of 19.36 crore have functional tap water connections.
  • This marks a dramatic rise from just 3.23 crore households (16.7%) in August 2019, to 80.94% coverage as of date.
  • 12.44 crore additional rural households have received tap water access under the Har Ghar Jal initiative.

Key Financial Highlights:

  • Cumulative central allocation from 2019–2025: over ₹273,000 crore.
  • Funds drawn by states (2023–24 alone): ₹93,470 crore.
  • Utilized funds in 2023–24: ₹69,219 crore.
  • Top fund utilizer states in 2023–24: Uttar Pradesh (₹20,285 crore), Rajasthan (₹3,905 crore), Maharashtra (₹8,371 crore).

State-wise Progress:

  • 100% tap water coverage achieved in Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Telangana, Puducherry, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and DNH & DD.
  • States like Uttar Pradesh (90.13%), Bihar (95.71%), and Madhya Pradesh (70.33%) made remarkable gains.
  • West Bengal, Kerala, Jharkhand, and Rajasthan remain below the 60% coverage mark.

The Minister of State for Jal Shakti, V. Somanna, provided these details in response to a written question in the Lok Sabha.

The Jal Jeevan Mission is one of the largest rural infrastructure schemes in the world and aims to provide safe and adequate drinking water to every rural household by 2026.
