NEW DELHI: The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), and the Geological Survey of India (GSI) have signed an Umbrella Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaboration in geoscience, mineral exploration and disaster management through next-generation digital technologies.

The MoU was signed at Electronics Niketan, New Delhi, on Tuesday in the presence of MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan. It was exchanged between C-DAC Director General E. Magesh and GSI Additional Director General Pradeep Singh.

The collaboration aims to combine C-DAC’s High-Performance Computing (HPC) capabilities with GSI’s geological expertise to address complex subsurface exploration challenges using advanced digital technologies.

As part of the partnership, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and HPC will be used to process large geophysical datasets, enabling high-resolution 3D subsurface mapping, predictive modelling for mineral targeting and cognitive processing of decades of unstructured geological records into a domain-specific Large Language Model (LLM).

The two organisations will also collaborate on disaster mitigation by deploying Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) for slope-scale landslide monitoring, developing early warning systems and conducting studies on Glacier Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs).

The initiative is expected to accelerate the discovery of critical minerals and Rare Earth Elements (REEs), contributing to India’s economic security, supply chain resilience and technological self-reliance.

Senior officials from MeitY, GSI and C-DAC attended the signing ceremony, including Joint Secretary Sudeep Srivastava, GSI Deputy Director General Maneesh Khar, C-DAC Executive Director (Corporate & Government Business) Cmde Sandeep Wadhwa, Executive Director of C-DAC Hyderabad Dr. Ch. A. S. Murty, Executive Director of C-DAC Kolkata Mrinmoy Kumar Das and scientists from C-DAC centres in Pune, Chennai and Hyderabad.

The collaboration is expected to create a technology-driven framework for modern geoscience research, faster mineral resource discovery and improved disaster preparedness by leveraging artificial intelligence, high-performance computing and advanced digital technologies.
