Lonar (Maharashtra): Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush and Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav inaugurated Yoga Mahotsav–2026 in Lonar, marking the beginning of the 75-day countdown to the International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026.

The event, organised by the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga under the Ministry of Ayush, witnessed nearly 5,000 participants performing the Common Yoga Protocol at Chhatrapati Shri Shivaji Maharaj Udyan, setting a record in the Asia Book of Records for the largest gathering performing Trikonasana.

Jadhav described the event as a strong start to the countdown for IDY 2026, stating that the large-scale participation reflected the growing global acceptance of Yoga as a tool for promoting health, unity, and well-being. He said the record-setting Trikonasana performance symbolised the spirit of collective participation and shared wellness.

Highlighting the significance of hosting the event in Lonar, a geologically unique region, he said the initiative represents a broader global awakening towards holistic health and harmony. He also emphasised the importance of Ayush Aahara, pointing to traditional foods such as millets, ragi, coconut oil and medicinal spices as key to strengthening immunity and promoting overall well-being.

Joint Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, Monalisa Dash said Yoga is one of India’s most valuable contributions to the world, describing it as a way of life that promotes harmony between mind, body and spirit.

The programme featured a live demonstration of the Common Yoga Protocol led by Prof. Kashinath Samagandi, Director of the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, covering Yogasana, Pranayama and Dhyana practices.

The event also showcased key initiatives of the Ministry of Ayush, including the “Yoga for Air Travel” protocol, “10 Yoga Protocols for Non-Communicable Diseases,” and the Yoga 365 campaign aimed at integrating Yoga into daily life. A toll-free helpline offering 14 days of free guided Yoga sessions was also highlighted.

The programme marked the formal launch of the 75-day nationwide build-up to the 12th International Day of Yoga. Over the years, IDY has evolved into one of the world’s largest health movements, with increasing global participation.

The upcoming edition of IDY 2026 will focus on addressing non-communicable diseases, promoting geriatric health, and exploring the integration of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence with Yoga practices.

The Ministry of Ayush said it will continue to promote Yoga as a mass movement through Jan Bhagidari, encouraging wider participation across the country and globally in the lead-up to IDY 2026.
