JADUGUDA: Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) celebrated the start of its diamond jubilee year on October 4, highlighting its role in developing indigenous uranium mining and processing capabilities for India’s nuclear power programme.

According to a Department of Atomic Energy release issued on Monday, the celebrations brought together officials, scientists, engineers, employees and media professionals at Jaduguda. Incorporated on October 4, 1967, UCIL completed 59 years and entered its 60th year.

Seema Jain, Member-Finance, Atomic Energy Commission, attended as chief guest. She visited the Technology Demonstration Pilot Plant at Jaduguda and the proposed new site of the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics’ Dark Matter Laboratory at the 815-metre level of the underground mine.

Jain recognised the contributions of Homi Jehangir Bhabha and the pioneers of India’s uranium mining programme. She also highlighted the work of successive generations of UCIL personnel in sustaining operations under challenging conditions.

Ajit Kumar Mohanty, Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy and Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, called for continued innovation and capability building as India advances its Nuclear Energy Mission.

The programme included a journalists’ workshop at the Information Centre in Narwapahar. Participating media professionals interacted with scientists and technical experts and visited uranium mining and milling facilities to understand ore handling, processing systems and operational practices.

A DAE technology exhibition introduced school students to the industrial and societal applications of nuclear and radiation technologies.

UCIL Chairman and Managing Director Kacham Anand Rao said the company had developed expertise and infrastructure in uranium mining and processing while strengthening technology, safety and environmental management.

The public-sector enterprise operates under the Department of Atomic Energy, supplying uranium resources for India’s nuclear power programme.
