Hyderabad: In a significant development, Akunuri Murali has resigned from his post as Chairman of the Telangana Education Commission, submitting his resignation letter to the state Chief Secretary on Friday.

Murali, a retired IAS officer, stated in his resignation letter that he had successfully completed the responsibilities entrusted to the Commission and had already submitted a comprehensive report with recommendations to the Telangana government on reforms and strengthening of the education system.

Expressing gratitude to the state government for giving him the opportunity to serve as Chairman of the Telangana Education Commission, Murali said the Commission had completed its assigned task of studying the education sector and preparing policy recommendations.

“We have successfully completed the work entrusted to us and submitted the report on education reforms to the government,” Murali reportedly stated in his resignation communication.

The Telangana government had constituted the Telangana Education Commission in September 2024 to revamp and strengthen the education sector in the state. Akunuri Murali was appointed as Chairperson with a two-year tenure.

The Commission was tasked with preparing a long-term policy framework for reforms in school, higher and technical education across Telangana.

Murali’s resignation comes amid discussions and criticism surrounding some of the recommendations reportedly made by the Commission in its recent education policy proposals. Teacher associations and opposition parties had raised objections to certain suggestions related to rationalisation and restructuring in the education sector.

Political and education circles are now closely watching the state government’s next steps regarding implementation of the Commission’s recommendations and the future direction of education reforms in Telangana.
