Shrewsbury International School India opens 150-acre residential campus in Bhopal; classes begin August 18

Bhopal, August 9: Shrewsbury International School India on Friday inaugurated its 150-acre fully residential campus in Bhopal, bringing the 473-year legacy of the UK institution to Madhya Pradesh. The ceremony was presided over by Hari Mohan Gupta, chairman of Jagran Social Welfare Society, in the presence of leaders from government and education.
In his address, Union Minister for Communications and DoNER Jyotiraditya Scindia said education must “build meaning into life,” adding that Shrewsbury aims to blend “the brilliance of a global school and the heartbeat of over a billion citizens” to deliver quality learning for the future.
Harjinder Kang, His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for South Asia and British Deputy High Commissioner to Western India, called the launch a milestone in the UK-India partnership, aligning with the newly endorsed India-UK Vision 2035 and its focus on education and skills collaboration.
Dignitaries at the event included deputy chief minister Rajendra Shukla, Rajya Sabha MP Digvijaya Singh, senior state ministers and officials. From the Shrewsbury side, attendees included Carla Howarth, chair of the advisory board of governors; Tim Haynes, former chair of the board of governors at Shrewsbury School UK; Abhishek Mohan Gupta, president of the board of management; Rakesh Mehra, vice chair of Jagran Social Welfare Society; and founding headmaster Dominic Tomalin.
The school said it will welcome its first cohort on August 18. Designed for grades 6–12 with a planned capacity of up to 600 pupils, the campus will follow the British curriculum, preparing students for Cambridge IGCSE in grades 9–10 and A-Levels in grades 11–12.
Facilities include specialised science labs, language learning centres, digital classrooms and studios for the performing and visual arts. The school highlighted a sports programme featuring what it described as India’s first on-campus training facilities for indoor rowing, fencing and scuba diving, alongside more than 20 indoor and outdoor sports. In partnership with Trinity College London, it will offer internationally recognised diplomas in music, speech and drama.
“It is rewarding to see Salopian virtues become part of the educational journey in India,” Howarth said, calling the opening of Shrewsbury’s first fully residential campus outside the UK a milestone for the school’s global network. Gupta said the institution aims to empower “innovators and thought leaders who will lead with purpose and contribute meaningfully to society.”
