New Delhi: South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited, has become the first Coal Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) to have one of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives notified in the Gazette of India, following a notification issued by the Ministry of Coal.
The notification covers SECL’s flagship CSR programme, SECL Ke Sushrut, and enables voluntary Aadhaar authentication for beneficiaries under the provisions of the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016, and the Aadhaar Authentication for Good Governance (Social Welfare, Innovation and Knowledge) Rules, 2020.
According to the ministry, the move is aimed at ensuring transparent, efficient and technology-enabled delivery of benefits while also allowing beneficiaries who choose not to use Aadhaar to establish their identity through other government-approved documents.
Launched in 2023, SECL Ke Sushrut provides free residential coaching for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) to meritorious students from SECL’s operational areas, helping them pursue careers in medicine and allied healthcare.
The programme has recorded encouraging results since its inception. In the first batch (2023–24), 39 of the 40 enrolled students qualified NEET. Eleven students secured admission to MBBS programmes, while others gained admission to BDS, BAMS, Bachelor of Physiotherapy and veterinary courses in government institutions across Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.
The second batch (2024–25) also performed well, with 31 out of 40 students qualifying NEET and securing admissions to MBBS, BDS, BAMS and Bachelor of Fisheries Science programmes in government institutions.
The ministry said the Gazette notification strengthens the institutional framework of the programme by improving transparency, accountability and ease of access for beneficiaries.
Earlier, SECL Ke Sushrut had become the first CSR initiative of any Coal PSU to be listed on the Government of India’s Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) Portal, supporting technology-enabled and transparent delivery of welfare benefits.
The Ministry of Coal said the initiative continues to create educational opportunities for students from mining communities while contributing to the country’s future healthcare workforce.
