Aizawl, December 15: Mizoram marked a major milestone in its transport and logistics journey as Sairang railway station handled its first-ever direct inward automobile rake, with 119 cars arriving by rail from Changsari near Guwahati.
The historic movement is expected to significantly improve vehicle availability in Aizawl, reduce dependence on long-distance road transport and benefit the state’s automobile ecosystem, including dealers, service providers and customers. Officials said the development represents a key step in strengthening Mizoram’s infrastructure and economic integration.
The consignment was received on the Bairabi–Sairang railway line, a critical infrastructure project for the state. Stretching 51.38 km and passing through 45 tunnels, the line has been constructed through challenging terrain and plays a strategic role in connecting Mizoram with the rest of the country.
The railway line was inaugurated on September 13, 2025, when the prime minister flagged off the Rajdhani Express between Aizawl (Sairang) and Delhi (Anand Vihar Terminal), the Mizoram Express between Aizawl and Guwahati, and an express train connecting Aizawl with Kolkata. The launch marked Mizoram’s full integration into India’s national rail network.
Passenger response to the new services has been strong. Railway officials said the Sairang–Anand Vihar Terminal Rajdhani Express is operating at 147% occupancy, the Sairang–Guwahati Mizoram Express at 115%, and the Sairang–Kolkata Express at 139%. Passengers have cited convenience, affordability and significant time savings as key advantages, along with improved access to education, healthcare and economic hubs in other states.
Freight operations on the route began shortly after inauguration, with the first freight rake on September 14 carrying cement wagons from Assam to Aizawl. Since then, the line has transported a range of essential commodities including cement, construction materials, automobiles, sand and stone chips.
The route has also supported parcel services, with the first outward consignment booked on September 19, when Anthurium flowers were transported from Sairang to Anand Vihar Terminal. Between September 17 and December 12, a total of 17 freight and parcel rakes were handled.
Officials said the arrival of rail-carried automobiles underscores the growing role of the Bairabi–Sairang line as a reliable logistics corridor, helping lower transport costs and supporting Mizoram’s long-term economic and infrastructural development.
