India, Bhutan Sign MoU to Boost Cooperation in Agriculture and Allied Sectors
The agreement was signed in Thimphu by Devesh Chaturvedi, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India, and Thinley Namgyel, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MoAL), Royal Government of Bhutan.
Thimphu, August 28: India and Bhutan have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation in agriculture and allied sectors, marking a new milestone in bilateral ties. The agreement was signed in Thimphu by Devesh Chaturvedi, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India, and Thinley Namgyel, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MoAL), Royal Government of Bhutan.
The MoU provides a framework for collaboration in agricultural research and innovation, livestock health and production, post-harvest management, value chain development, and the exchange of knowledge, skills, and expertise. Officials said the initiative reflects the shared commitment of both countries to food security, sustainable farming, and rural prosperity.
Following the signing, the two sides held the first meeting of the Joint Technical Working Group (JTWG), where they finalized terms of reference and priority areas for immediate action. Both delegations underscored the meeting as a key step towards deepening agricultural cooperation.
Chaturvedi highlighted India’s new initiatives to strengthen the farm sector, including digital solutions, climate-resilient practices, risk mitigation, and enhanced farmer credit. Detailed discussions also covered agricultural marketing, cooperatives, food processing, seed sector development, research partnerships, and capacity building.
The two countries agreed to hold the next JTWG meeting in India at a mutually convenient date. Officials said the visit of the Indian Agriculture Secretary reaffirmed the tradition of regular high-level exchanges and the close bonds of friendship between India and Bhutan.
