Commercial users urged to switch fuels as Centre steps up supply management amid West Asia developments

New Delhi: The Union government on Saturday issued a nationwide public advisory urging citizens to avoid panic bookings of LPG and rely on official information, while simultaneously pushing commercial consumers in urban areas to transition to piped natural gas (PNG) as part of a broader fuel management strategy.

The advisory comes in the backdrop of evolving geopolitical developments in West Asia, with authorities emphasising that adequate stocks of petrol, diesel, and domestic LPG are available and supply chains remain stable.

Citizens have been specifically advised to refrain from crowding at LPG distributorships and instead depend on home delivery systems. The government has also encouraged the use of digital platforms for booking cylinders and called for responsible consumption practices.

PNG Shift for Commercial Users

As part of demand rationalisation measures, commercial LPG consumers in major cities—including restaurants, hotels, and canteens—have been advised to shift to PNG wherever available.

City Gas Distribution entities have been directed to prioritise PNG connections for commercial establishments, with companies such as IGL, MGL, GAIL Gas, and BPCL offering incentives to accelerate adoption. Ministries and states have also been asked to fast-track approvals for expanding PNG infrastructure.

The move is aimed at reducing pressure on LPG supplies while ensuring uninterrupted fuel availability for households and priority sectors.

Supply Stable, Monitoring Intensified

Officials reiterated that there are no reports of fuel shortages across retail outlets, and domestic LPG deliveries are proceeding normally. Panic bookings, which had seen a temporary rise, are now declining.

At the same time, enforcement agencies have intensified action against hoarding and black marketing. Thousands of inspections and raids have been conducted across states and Union Territories to ensure smooth distribution.

Call for Responsible Consumption

The advisory also encourages citizens to adopt alternate energy options such as PNG and electric cooking appliances, while practising energy conservation in daily use.

The government maintained that coordinated efforts across ministries and States are underway to ensure uninterrupted supply of essential fuels and to prevent any disruption in public access.
