Addressing the convocation ceremony of Fakir Mohan University, President Droupadi Murmu said universities must nurture critical thinking, ethical leadership and research that responds to both local and global challenges. She expressed confidence that Fakir Mohan University, through its academic vision and community engagement, would play a transformative role in this direction.

Paying tributes to Vyasakabi Fakir Mohan Senapati, President Droupadi Murmu said she was deeply influenced during her student days by his story Revati, which portrays the determination of a girl pursuing education in the 19th century. She recalled her own educational journey from a remote tribal village to Bhubaneswar, describing Fakir Mohan Senapati as a lasting source of inspiration.
Highlighting the importance of mother tongue in education, the President referred to Fakir Mohan Senapati’s deep love for Odia and said learning in one’s mother tongue helps students understand their culture, customs and civilizational values. She noted that the National Education Policy 2020 emphasizes education in the mother tongue to keep learners connected to their cultural roots.
President Droupadi Murmu said India possesses a rich knowledge tradition preserved in scriptures and manuscripts that encompass science, medicine, astronomy and architecture, apart from literature. She encouraged students to engage in research rooted in this ancient knowledge, saying an understanding of the past and present enables them to shape their own future and that of the nation.
Congratulating the graduating students, the President said knowledge, passion and commitment are the foundations for earning respect and recognition in society. She observed that while success is important, making life meaningful is even more valuable, and urged students to contribute to the welfare of those left behind in the development process.
The President appreciated Fakir Mohan University for giving importance to research and outreach programmes alongside academics. She noted the university’s initiatives linked to the Balasore-Bhadrak region’s strengths in paddy, betel leaves and fisheries, and praised programmes such as Back to School, Earn While Learn, Each One Teach One, environmental awareness and beach cleaning drives. She said the proposal to establish research centres on blue crabs or horseshoe crabs reflected the university’s foresight.
