New Delhi, December 5: India’s postal network has undergone one of its largest technology upgrades with the nationwide rollout of the Advanced Postal Technology (APT) platform, integrating nearly 1.70 lakh post offices across 23 postal circles under a unified, cloud-based digital architecture. The system, developed in-house by the Centre for Excellence in Postal Technology (CEPT) and hosted on MeghRaj 2.0 cloud, was deployed globally on August 4 and now forms the backbone of India’s modern postal and financial services ecosystem.

The Department of Posts said APT is designed to be agile, scalable and capable of supporting the rising digital service expectations of citizens in both urban and rural regions. As part of the rollout, branch post offices have been equipped with Android smartphones running the Digital Rural Enterprise Application for Mobile (DREAM) app, strengthening connectivity and improving user experience in remote areas. Under the core banking solution, 25,022 departmental post offices have been networked.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar informed that every post office across the country now provides India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) services and is connected to the IPPB Core Banking Solution (CBS). All postmen and Grameen Dak Sevaks (GDS) have been equipped with smartphones and biometric devices, enabling secure doorstep delivery of a wide range of banking services.

Through IPPB, citizens can access digital account opening, Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AePS) transactions, Digital Life Certificate (DLC) issuance, third-party insurance services, Post Office Savings Account linkage, credit referral services, mobile number update in Aadhaar, and Child Aadhaar enrolment for children below five years. The department said these services are now being delivered at the customer’s doorstep, significantly expanding last-mile financial inclusion.

Officials noted that the digital modernisation effort aligns with the government’s broader mandate to strengthen public-facing digital infrastructure, improve rural service delivery, and create a seamless, paperless, and citizen-centric postal ecosystem. With APT and IPPB systems now integrated across all post offices, the Department of Posts said it is positioned to support high-volume financial transactions, digital identity services and expanded government-to-citizen delivery channels at national scale.
