Regulator urges users to report spam and fraud through the TRAI DND App instead of merely blocking calls

New Delhi, November 24: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has urged mobile users to report spam calls and messages through the TRAI DND App, emphasising that blocking numbers on personal devices does not stop spammers or fraudsters at the source.

Over the past year, TRAI—acting on citizen-generated complaints—has facilitated the disconnection and blacklisting of more than 21 lakh mobile numbers and about one lakh entities involved in sending spam and fraudulent communications. The regulator said the scale of action reflects how collective reporting by subscribers plays a vital role in curbing telecom misuse across the country.

TRAI said that when users report spam through the DND App, telecom service providers and the regulator can trace, investigate and permanently disconnect offending numbers. In contrast, blocking a number on a personal handset simply prevents calls to that user, while scammers continue targeting others through new or multiple numbers.

Public advisory

TRAI advised citizens to download the TRAI DND App and use it to report unsolicited commercial communications. Users have been reminded not to share personal or banking information over calls, messages or social media, and to immediately disconnect any threatening or suspicious calls. Cyber frauds should be reported to the National Cybercrime Helpline (1930) or the official portal, while attempted fraud through telecom resources may also be reported via the “Chakshu’’ feature on Sanchar Saathi.

The Authority reiterated its commitment to ensuring a safe and trustworthy telecom ecosystem through strong enforcement, technology-led monitoring and active public participation. It urged all users—particularly senior citizens, women and digitally inexperienced audiences—to stay vigilant, share the advisory widely and promptly report any suspicious communication.
