ARUSHA, Tanzania: An Indian Parliamentary Delegation led by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh participated in committee sessions and held bilateral meetings on October 5, the opening day of the 153rd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Tanzania.

According to an official account of the delegation’s engagements, Indian MPs attended meetings covering health, inclusive social development, women’s leadership and efforts to counter terrorism and violent extremism.

Harivansh and other delegation members participated in the Asia-Pacific Geopolitical Group meeting, where Lok Sabha MP and IPU Executive Committee member Aparajita Sarangi briefed participants on the committee’s recent activities and initiatives.

At the Forum of Women Parliamentarians, Lok Sabha MP Kamaljeet Sehrawat presented India’s perspective during a debate on parliamentary strategies to promote the rights and empowerment of people living with disabilities. Lok Sabha MP Bijuli Kalita Medhi participated in a separate session on women’s leadership.

Lok Sabha MP Sanjay Jaiswal attended sessions of the IPU Committee on Health, of which he is a member. Rajya Sabha MP Sasmit Patra participated in a meeting of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly.

Lok Sabha MP Lata Wankhede attended the board meeting of the IPU High-Level Advisory Group on Countering Terrorism and Violent Extremism.

The delegation also held bilateral meetings with Australian House of Representatives Speaker Milton Dick and Tanzanian Parliament Speaker Mussa Azzan Zungu, discussing issues of mutual interest.

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan formally opened the Assembly at an inaugural ceremony organised by the country’s Parliament. Harivansh attended the ceremony alongside MPs Aparajita Sarangi, Anurag Singh Thakur, NK Premachandran and Sasmit Patra.

The Indian representatives also interacted with Tanzanian ministers, including the foreign minister.
