Jakarta/New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced that Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM Bangalore) will establish its first international campus in Indonesia, marking a significant milestone in the global expansion of India’s higher education ecosystem.

The announcement was made during the Prime Minister’s official visit to Indonesia in a joint press statement with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.

Prime Minister Modi said the proposed campus would benefit not only Indonesian students but also the youth across the Association of Southeast Asian Nations region by providing access to world-class management education rooted in India’s globally respected academic ecosystem.

The new campus will be established at the Singhasari Special Economic Zone in Malang through a partnership between IIM Bangalore and PT Intelegensia Grahatama (PT IGT), the managing and development entity of the Special Economic Zone.

A New Chapter in India’s Education Diplomacy

The Indonesia campus will be the first overseas campus of IIM Bangalore and adds to India’s growing network of globally established premier institutions. It follows the successful international expansion of Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad in Dubai, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in Abu Dhabi, and Indian Institute of Technology Madras in Zanzibar.

The initiative reinforces India’s emergence as a trusted global knowledge partner and aligns with the vision of the National Education Policy 2020, which encourages premier Indian institutions to establish an international presence and expand access to quality education worldwide.

Curriculum Focused on Future-Ready Leadership

The proposed campus will offer programmes built around five emerging areas that are shaping the global economy:

  • Global Supply Chains
  • Digital Transformation
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Climate and Sustainability
  • Healthcare Management

The curriculum will be complemented by interactions with leading industry executives, distinguished academicians, policymakers, and global thought leaders to equip participants with practical insights into contemporary business challenges.

Two-Phase Rollout

The campus will be developed in two phases.

The first phase will begin with Executive Education programmes designed for senior executives, business leaders, entrepreneurs, and public sector professionals. Based on the successful implementation of this phase over the first two years, the institute plans to launch full-fledged degree-granting management programmes in the second phase.

Participants enrolled at the Indonesia campus will also have opportunities to undertake short academic immersion programmes at IIM Bangalore’s Bengaluru campus, enabling them to experience India’s innovation ecosystem, entrepreneurial culture, and industry landscape.

Strengthening India-Indonesia Strategic Partnership

The initiative is expected to deepen academic collaboration and human capital development between India and Indonesia while positioning Indonesia as a regional hub for high-quality management education. It also reflects the shared commitment of both countries to strengthening knowledge partnerships across the Indo-Pacific.

By taking one of India’s premier management institutions overseas, the initiative further advances India’s vision of making the Global South a preferred destination for world-class education, leadership development, innovation, and research while enhancing educational cooperation across Southeast Asia.
