New Delhi: India on Friday successfully carried out the test launch of the short-range ballistic missile Agni-1 from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur off the Odisha coast, marking another milestone in the country’s strategic defence preparedness and missile capability enhancement.
The Ministry of Defence said the launch was conducted under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command and successfully validated all operational and technical parameters.
According to the ministry, the missile was launched from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, one of India’s key missile testing facilities operated for strategic and defence research programmes.
The successful launch demonstrated the operational readiness, reliability and accuracy of the Agni-1 missile system, which forms an important component of India’s strategic deterrence capability.
Agni-1 is a short-range ballistic missile capable of carrying both conventional and strategic payloads. Developed as part of India’s indigenous missile development programme, the missile is designed for quick deployment and high operational flexibility.
Defence officials said the test was aimed at validating the missile’s operational performance and ensuring the effectiveness of its navigation, guidance and control systems under operational conditions.
The launch also reaffirmed the preparedness of the Strategic Forces Command, which is responsible for managing and administering India’s strategic nuclear assets.
Agni-series missiles constitute a major pillar of India’s strategic deterrence architecture and have been developed under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme.
Over the years, India has carried out multiple successful tests of the Agni missile family, including Agni-I, Agni-II, Agni-III, Agni-IV and Agni-V, significantly strengthening the country’s strategic defence capability.
MoD stated that the launch successfully met all mission objectives and validated the missile’s operational parameters.
