Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Saturday outlined an ambitious roadmap to transform Hyderabad into a traffic-free, pollution-controlled global city through integrated urban planning, multi-modal transport infrastructure, electric mobility, and the Musi River rejuvenation project.

Addressing the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Housing and Urban Affairs at the Dr BR Ambedkar Telangana State Secretariat, the Chief Minister said the government is pursuing a systematic development strategy for Hyderabad’s Core Urban Region (CURE) within the Outer Ring Road limits to meet the challenges arising from rapid urbanization and modernization.

The meeting was attended by Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee, Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy, other committee members, Chief Secretary Ramakrishna Rao, and senior officials from the Central and state governments.

Revanth Reddy said Hyderabad’s traffic management requires a comprehensive multi-modal transport approach rather than conventional road expansion alone.

“We are striving to transform Hyderabad into a traffic-free city. In key areas, we are adopting a three-pronged strategy comprising underpasses, surface roads, and elevated corridors to improve mobility,” the Chief Minister said.

He added that the government is also establishing multi-level parking facilities across the city to address growing parking congestion.

The Chief Minister presented Telangana’s long-term development framework built around three economic zones – Core Urban Region Economy (CURE), Peri-Urban Region Economy (PURE), and Rural Agriculture Region Economy (RARE).

Under the framework, the area within the Outer Ring Road has been designated as the CURE zone focused on the services sector, while the region between the Outer Ring Road and Regional Ring Road has been earmarked as the PURE zone centred on manufacturing and industrial growth. Areas beyond the Regional Ring Road will form the RARE zone dedicated to agriculture and allied sectors.

Revanth Reddy said these plans are part of the broader “Telangana Rising 2047” vision document aimed at transforming Telangana into a $1 trillion economy by 2034 and a $3 trillion economy by 2047.

Highlighting environmental initiatives, the Chief Minister said the government is implementing multiple measures to reduce pollution in Hyderabad, including promotion of electric vehicles and induction of EV buses into the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation fleet.

He also announced that existing auto-rickshaws operating within the Core Urban Region would be retrofitted into electric vehicles free of cost as part of the government’s clean mobility initiative.

The Chief Minister said the Musi Riverfront development project is being integrated with Hyderabad’s cultural identity while simultaneously addressing pollution concerns.

Senior officials made PowerPoint presentations before the Standing Committee on Hyderabad’s drinking water supply, urban infrastructure expansion, and Musi River rejuvenation plans. The state government also sought greater cooperation from the Centre for accelerating Hyderabad’s infrastructure and urban transformation initiatives.

Members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee described the Musi River Rejuvenation Project as a “revolutionary” initiative and said it was among the first large-scale urban river restoration projects in the country aimed at improving citizens’ quality of life.

The committee also appreciated the Telangana government’s initiatives for women’s empowerment and commended the Chief Minister for undertaking large-scale urban transformation measures.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Revanth Reddy felicitated the Standing Committee members and presented them copies of the “Telangana Rising 2047” vision document.
