ROB at Deendayal Port to ease congestion, strengthen multi-modal logistics under Sagarmala

New Delhi: Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal has approved a ₹132.51 crore project for the construction of a Road Over Bridge (ROB) at Deendayal Port Authority in Kandla, aimed at improving cargo evacuation and easing congestion at the port.
The project, to be executed at Level Crossing-235, is part of the government’s Sagarmala Programme and aligns with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan to enhance multi-modal connectivity and logistics efficiency. The construction is being undertaken by Western Railway on a deposit basis.
Sonowal said the project reflects the government’s commitment to modernising port infrastructure and strengthening seamless connectivity. He noted that the ROB will remove critical bottlenecks, improve cargo movement, and contribute to building integrated logistics systems under the broader vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The proposal was appraised by the Delegated Investment Board in a meeting chaired by the Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, where the revised project cost was examined to ensure adherence to updated safety and technical standards.
The planned infrastructure is expected to eliminate delays caused by rail crossings, enabling uninterrupted movement of port-bound cargo and significantly improving operational efficiency at Deendayal Port. Once completed, the project will reduce congestion, facilitate faster cargo evacuation, and strengthen the overall maritime logistics chain.
As part of the government’s push for integrated infrastructure planning, the ministry has also directed all major ports to map their projects on the PM Gati Shakti portal to enhance coordination, synchronisation, and faster execution of multi-modal connectivity initiatives.
