NEW DELHI: WWF-India’s Programme Centre–Resource Partner has launched a nationwide Green Diwali campaign urging citizens to avoid firecrackers and adopt environmentally responsible practices during the festival.

Supported by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the campaign runs from October 20 to November 8, 2026, according to a ministry statement issued on Sunday.

The initiative aligns with Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) and will reach schools, colleges, resident welfare associations and local communities. It will place particular emphasis on the 130 cities covered under the National Clean Air Programme.

Citizens are encouraged to take a Green Diwali pledge to avoid firecrackers and encourage family members and neighbours to do the same. Other suggested actions include using diyas and energy-efficient lighting, avoiding single-use plastics, segregating waste and choosing local products.

Educational institutions and community organisations can hold pledge drives during assemblies, classes, rallies and neighbourhood meetings.

The campaign also encourages participation in WWF-India’s online Carbon Footprint Survey, which helps users understand how daily activities and consumption contribute to their environmental footprint and identify more sustainable habits.

Participating institutions, community groups and individuals have been asked to submit activity details through an online reporting form. Submissions should include the organisation’s name and location, activity dates, pledge participation numbers, geo-tagged photographs and a brief report.

Selected contributions may be featured on Environmental Information, Awareness, Capacity Building and Livelihood Programme (EIACP) websites and social media platforms.
