PM Modi Embarks on Three-Nation Tour to Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand
Visit to focus on strategic partnerships, trade, Indo-Pacific cooperation, technology and diaspora engagement
Prime Minister Narendra Modi emplanes for Indonesia from New Delhi on Monday, embarking on the first leg of his three-nation visit to Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand from July 6 to 11, 2026.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday embarked on a six-day, three-nation visit to Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand, aimed at strengthening India’s strategic partnerships, expanding economic cooperation and reinforcing its Act East Policy and Indo-Pacific vision.
The visit, scheduled from July 6 to 11, will include bilateral meetings with the leaders of the three countries, interactions with the Indian diaspora and discussions on defence, trade, investment, technology and people-to-people ties.
Indonesia Visit Begins Tour
Prime Minister Modi’s first stop will be Indonesia, where he will hold talks with President Prabowo Subianto from July 6 to 8.
The visit marks Modi’s first bilateral visit to Indonesia since the two countries elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during his 2018 visit. It also follows President Prabowo’s State Visit to India as the Chief Guest at the Republic Day celebrations in January 2025.
The Prime Minister said India and Indonesia share deep civilisational links and longstanding people-to-people ties, adding that the visit would further deepen the multifaceted bilateral partnership.
During his stay, Modi will also interact with members of the Indian diaspora and visit the Prambanan Temple complex in Yogyakarta along with President Prabowo, highlighting the shared cultural heritage between the two nations.
Australia: Expanding Strategic Cooperation
From Indonesia, the Prime Minister will travel to Melbourne at the invitation of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
The discussions are expected to focus on strengthening the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with emphasis on:
- Defence and security cooperation
- Trade and investment
- Education and mobility
- Emerging and critical technologies
- Sports and sports science
- People-to-people ties
Prime Minister Modi will also meet members of the Indian diaspora in Australia, describing the community as an important pillar of bilateral relations.
New Zealand: Building on Growing Momentum
The final leg of the tour will take the Prime Minister to Auckland, where he will hold bilateral talks with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon.
The visit follows Prime Minister Luxon’s visit to India in March 2025, which injected fresh momentum into bilateral ties.
The two leaders are expected to discuss ways to further strengthen economic, trade and commercial engagement following the signing of the India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement.
Modi will also address a large gathering of the Indian community in New Zealand, acknowledging the diaspora’s contribution to strengthening bilateral relations.
Reinforcing India’s Indo-Pacific Vision
In his departure statement, the Prime Minister said the three-nation tour would further strengthen India’s Act East Policy, MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) Vision, and commitment to a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific.
The visit comes at a time when India is deepening engagement with key partners across the Indo-Pacific amid growing emphasis on regional connectivity, maritime security, resilient supply chains and strategic cooperation.
By combining diplomatic engagements with economic discussions, cultural outreach and diaspora interactions, the tour underscores India’s expanding role in shaping partnerships across the Eastern and Southern Indian Ocean region while advancing its broader strategic and economic interests.
