Nine innovators recognised for AI-driven solutions in health claims adjudication and fraud detection

New Delhi: The IndiaAI Mission, in collaboration with the National Health Authority (NHA) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, felicitated the winners of the AB PM-JAY Auto-Adjudication Hackathon Showcase 2026 at IISc Bengaluru on May 9, marking the culmination of a two-day national showcase focused on AI-led innovation in public health insurance.

The hackathon aimed at developing advanced technology solutions to improve the speed, transparency and accuracy of claims adjudication under Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY), while also strengthening fraud detection capabilities.

Sunil Kumar Barnwal, CEO, National Health Authority; Abhishek Singh, Director General, National Testing Agency; Jyoti Yadav, Joint Secretary, NHA; and Shikha Dahiya, Joint Director, MeitY, felicitated the innovators whose solutions demonstrated the potential to transform AI-enabled claims adjudication systems.

The competition invited solutions across three high-impact problem statements related to the adjudication of claims under AB PM-JAY, one of the world’s largest publicly funded health assurance programmes. The scheme processes a large volume of claims daily across more than 1,900 treatment packages.

Winners Across Three Problem Statements

Clinical Document Classification & STG Compliance

The first problem statement focused on automatically reading mixed-quality healthcare documents, extracting key data, detecting mandatory visual elements and verifying compliance with Standard Treatment Guidelines (STG) issued by NHA.

  • Winner: Vinay Babu Ulli
  • Runner-Up: Khushi Singh
  • Second Runner-Up: Vijay Balaji

Radiological Image-Based Condition Detection & Report Correlation

The second category addressed validation of image-based investigations such as X-rays, CT scans and MRIs submitted under STG requirements, along with correlation of radiology reports for accurate claim adjudication.

  • Winner: Harish Kumar
  • Runner-Up: Bharath Varma Sangaraju
  • Second Runner-Up: Arnold Sachith

Document Forgery & Deepfake Detection

The third problem statement focused on detecting forged or synthetically generated documents, including manipulated discharge summaries, tampered bills, ghost identities and AI-generated artefacts during claim submissions.

  • Winner: Praveen Sridhar
  • Runner-Up: Nikhileswara Rao Sulake
  • Second Runner-Up: Sumanth Naidu Mathireddy

Winning teams received cash prizes of ₹5 lakh, ₹3 lakh and ₹2 lakh respectively.

Officials said selected solutions may be considered for future deployment within the AB PM-JAY ecosystem to strengthen automation, fraud prevention and operational efficiency in public healthcare insurance delivery.
