New Delhi, November 4: The Department of Consumer Affairs, in collaboration with MyGov and the Chair on Consumer Law at National Law University Delhi, has launched a logo design competition on “Empowering Consumers through Repairability Index.” The initiative seeks to crowdsource creative designs that will visually represent India’s Right to Repair movement and promote a circular economy through responsible consumption.

The logo will serve as an official emblem of the Repairability Index Framework, helping consumers identify a product’s repairability rating at a glance and symbolizing transparency, sustainability, and empowerment.

The Department of Consumer Affairs has developed the Right to Repair through Repairability Index Framework to enable consumers to make informed choices, reduce e-waste, and promote longer product life cycles. The initiative aims to give consumers the option to repair products at optimal cost rather than replace them, thereby strengthening both consumer rights and environmental responsibility.

Initially, the framework will cover five key sectors — farming equipment, mobile phones and tablets, consumer durables, automobiles, and automobile equipment. It will guide manufacturers toward greater repair transparency, spare parts availability, and eco-friendly design practices.

Entries for the logo competition are open to all Indian citizens aged 16 years and above as of November 1, 2025. Participants must submit an original logo design along with a brief concept note explaining its relevance to the theme. Entries must be uploaded via the MyGov portal (Empowering consumers through Repairability Index | MyGov.in) by November 30, 2025 (11:45 PM IST). The winning entry will receive a cash prize of ₹25,000, and the selected logo may be officially adopted as the emblem of the Repairability Index framework.

According to the department, the logo will:

  • Indicate a product’s Repairability Index rating;
  • Symbolize the Right to Repair and circular economy principles; and
  • Serve as a certification mark that consumers can easily recognize.

The Repairability Index will assess products on six parameters, including ease of disassembly, availability of repair information and spare parts, software updates, and accessibility of tools and fasteners. Manufacturers (OEMs) will be required to self-declare their Repairability Index (RI) scores, which will be displayed at the point of sale and on packaging through QR codes.

Launched as part of the government’s LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) movement, the initiative aligns with India’s mission to promote mindful consumption, reduce waste, and build a sustainable, repair-driven economy.

The Department has invited students, designers, innovators, and citizens across India to participate and contribute to shaping a future where consumers enjoy true ownership of their products and where repair becomes a right, not a privilege.
