VISAKHAPATNAM: ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has signed a shareholders’ agreement with the Centre and the Andhra Pradesh government to upgrade four government Industrial Training Institutes under the PM-SETU scheme, with an approved investment of ₹200 crore.

In a statement issued on October 12, the company said the agreement formalises the partnership for implementing the project in the Visakhapatnam cluster. A dedicated special purpose vehicle will be formed to manage the upgrades and operations.

AM/NS India will hold a 51% stake in the entity, while the Centre and the Andhra Pradesh government will hold 24.5% each.

The project covers Government ITI (Old), Kancharapalem; Government ITI (Girls), Industrial Estate, Visakhapatnam; Government ITI, Bobbili; and Government ITI, Narsipatnam. The Kancharapalem institute will function as the main training centre, supporting the other three through shared facilities and resources.

Planned improvements include modernising training facilities, updating existing courses, introducing new trades and strengthening instructor training. AM/NS India will implement the project with the New Age Makers’ Institute of Technology (NAMTECH), its academic and technical partner.

The company said the cluster’s Strategic Investment Plan was the first to receive National Steering Committee approval under PM-SETU.

Andhra Pradesh minister Nara Lokesh said the partnership would bring industry expertise into technical education and help students acquire practical skills aligned with employers’ requirements.

Ashutosh Telang, director and vice-president for HR and administration at AM/NS India, said the company would combine its manufacturing experience with NAMTECH’s technical education expertise to strengthen hands-on learning and develop local talent.

The Andhra Pradesh agreement is one of two separate shareholders’ agreements signed by AM/NS India under the scheme. The other covers five government ITIs in Gujarat’s Surat cluster. Together, the projects cover nine institutes with a combined approved investment of ₹440 crore.

PM-SETU, or Pradhan Mantri Skilling and Employability Transformation through Upgraded ITIs, has a total outlay of ₹60,000 crore. It aims to upgrade 1,000 government ITIs through industry partnerships and strengthen five National Skill Training Institutes.
