Collaboration to focus on iron ore beneficiation, green steel, AI-driven mining and critical minerals
Hyderabad: The R&D Centre of NMDC Limited has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT Hyderabad) to strengthen academic and research collaboration in mineral processing and allied areas.
The MoU was signed by Sanjeev Sahi, executive director (R&D), NMDC, and the dean (sponsored research & consultancy), IIT Hyderabad, in the presence of BS Murty, Director, IIT Hyderabad. The partnership aims to advance indigenous technologies across mining and metallurgical domains.
Under the collaboration, NMDC and IIT Hyderabad will undertake research in iron ore beneficiation and agglomeration, green steelmaking technologies, alternate ironmaking using indigenous raw materials, and advanced modelling and simulation of mining and metallurgical processes. The institutions will also explore extraction of critical and rare earth minerals from primary and secondary sources to strengthen India’s mineral security and resource resilience.
Aligned with the digital transformation of the mining sector, the MoU will drive pilot initiatives in autonomous vehicle movement, artificial intelligence, internet of things (IoT), Mining 4.0 frameworks, and drone-enabled surveying and monitoring.
Amitava Mukherjee, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, NMDC, said the partnership reinforces the company’s commitment to industry–academia collaboration. He noted that leveraging IIT Hyderabad’s research capabilities alongside NMDC’s domain expertise would help advance indigenous technologies in mining and mineral processing, contributing to sustainable development and the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
The collaboration coincides with the 50th anniversary of NMDC’s R&D Centre, marking five decades of contribution to India’s mineral development. Both institutions said the partnership would focus on translating research into scalable industrial applications and strengthening innovation-led growth in the country’s mineral and metals sector.
