New Delhi, January 1: State-owned telecom operator BSNL has launched Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi) services across all telecom circles in the country, allowing customers to make and receive calls and messages using Wi-Fi networks.
The service enables seamless voice connectivity in areas with weak or no mobile signals, including homes, offices, basements and remote locations. Calls can be made using the customer’s existing mobile number and phone dialer, without the need for third-party applications.
VoWiFi is an IMS-based service that supports smooth handover between Wi-Fi and mobile networks, ensuring uninterrupted calls when users move between coverage zones. The facility is particularly useful in rural and underserved regions where mobile coverage is limited but broadband connectivity is available through BSNL Bharat Fiber or other internet services.
BSNL said the service will help reduce network congestion and improve call quality. VoWiFi is being offered free of cost, with no additional charges for Wi-Fi-based calls.
The nationwide rollout is part of BSNL’s ongoing network modernisation programme aimed at strengthening digital connectivity and expanding access in difficult-to-reach areas.
VoWiFi is supported on most modern smartphones. Customers can activate the service by enabling Wi-Fi Calling in their handset settings. For device compatibility and assistance, BSNL users can visit customer service centres or contact the helpline at 1800-1503.
