PUNE: Mercedes-Benz India has commenced local production of its all-electric GLC 400 4MATIC SUV at its manufacturing facility in Chakan, Pune, marking the company’s first locally manufactured vehicle based on its next-generation MB.EA-M electric vehicle architecture.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar rolled out the first locally produced Electric GLC in the presence of senior Mercedes-Benz AG and Mercedes-Benz India executives.

The Electric GLC is the first Mercedes-Benz SUV manufactured in India on the company’s dedicated electric vehicle platform. It features an 800-volt electrical architecture, dual electric motors and the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), which integrates digital intelligence and connected vehicle technologies.

The vehicle offers a claimed range of up to 711 km under the combined WLTP test cycle, as certified by ARAI. Its dual motors deliver 360 kW of power and 800 Nm of torque, enabling acceleration from 0 to 100 kmph in 4.3 seconds.

Pune plant integrates electric and combustion-engine production

A key feature of the new production programme is the integration of electric and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles on the same flexible manufacturing line at the Chakan facility.

The arrangement enables Mercedes-Benz India to manufacture multiple vehicle platforms and powertrain technologies under one roof, reflecting the plant’s production flexibility.

Pune now joins Mercedes-Benz’s Bremen facility in Germany in producing the all-new Electric GLC.

The company has announced an additional investment of ₹200 crore in 2026 towards manufacturing operations, new product start-ups and digitisation. Its cumulative investment in India has reached ₹3,200 crore, which it describes as the highest investment by a luxury automobile manufacturer in the country.

Mercedes-Benz India has sold more than 2.4 lakh vehicles in the country, with the majority locally manufactured. Its Chakan facility works with nearly 20 direct Indian suppliers and supports an estimated additional 18,000 people through suppliers and service providers in the region.

AI, robotics and digitalisation drive manufacturing

The Pune facility operates more than 15 live artificial intelligence projects aimed at improving manufacturing quality, operational efficiency, decision-making and workforce capabilities.

Camera-based Vision AI systems monitor product and process quality in real time, while data-driven supply-chain models help anticipate potential disruptions. AI-powered digital tools are also being used for workforce training and skill development.

Industrial robots undertake critical manufacturing operations, including welding, riveting and painting, to improve accuracy and process reliability.

Mercedes-Benz India has also expanded its solar power capacity by 70% within a year and introduced its first-ever Software Terminal to support the integration of MB.OS architecture into its locally manufactured vehicle portfolio.

Electric GLC priced at ₹78.50 lakh

The Electric GLC 400 4MATIC is priced at ₹78.50 lakh, ex-showroom, pan-India. Customer deliveries are scheduled to commence in mid-November 2026.

The vehicle features a 94 kWh usable battery, a maximum DC charging capacity of 330 kW and the ability to add up to 303 km of range in 10 minutes under optimal charging conditions.

Its digital features include a 39.1-inch MBUX Hyperscreen, intelligent navigation, advanced driver assistance systems, over-the-air software updates and personalised user experiences.

Mercedes-Benz India has also introduced MB.CHARGE Public Charging Credits as an alternative to the complimentary AC wall box offered to new battery electric vehicle customers.

Customers opting out of the wall box can receive 2,500 kWh of complimentary public charging credits, valid for 24 months from activation of the MB.CHARGE Public service. The company’s public charging ecosystem currently provides access to more than 22,000 charging points across India.

The GLC first entered the Indian market in 2016 and has since attracted nearly 22,000 customers. Mercedes-Benz India said the new electric version received more than 550 expressions of interest within the first 36 hours of opening bookings.

Mercedes-Benz Group AG Chairman Ola Källenius said India remained an important market for the company, with the Electric GLC bringing the established GLC experience into the electric mobility era.

Mercedes-Benz India Managing Director and CEO Santosh Iyer described the local production milestone as significant for the company’s growth plans in India, highlighting the country’s importance as both a strategic market and a manufacturing base.
