Amgen to open science and innovation centre in Hyderabad’s Genome Valley
The centre is expected to be operational in 2027 and will bring together discovery chemistry, drug metabolism, precision medicine, data and digital innovation as part of Amgen’s global R&D network.

HYDERABAD: Global biotechnology company Amgen has announced plans to establish a new Science and Innovation Center at Genome Valley in Hyderabad, expanding the city’s role in the company’s global research and development network.
The centre, expected to become operational in 2027, will bring together scientists and technologists working across discovery chemistry, drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics, and precision medicine.
The new facility will become part of Amgen’s global R&D network, which currently comprises seven research laboratories. The company said the Hyderabad centre will strengthen its scientific capabilities by integrating experimental science with data and digital innovation to accelerate the discovery and development of medicines for patients worldwide.
The announcement adds another major global research presence to Hyderabad’s Genome Valley, one of India’s established life-sciences clusters.
Amgen said the new centre will work closely with its research sites around the world, enabling greater collaboration across its global scientific network and improving the speed, precision and efficiency of medicine discovery and development.
Hyderabad gains another global R&D hub
The investment strengthens Hyderabad’s position as a destination for high-value life-sciences research, particularly as pharmaceutical research increasingly converges with biotechnology, artificial intelligence, data science and advanced digital technologies.
Jay Bradner, executive vice president of Research and Development, Artificial Intelligence and Data at Amgen, said the Hyderabad centre would expand the company’s ability to integrate experimental science with data and technology across its global research capabilities.
According to Bradner, connecting these capabilities would allow Amgen to learn faster and translate scientific insights into innovative medicines.
The company said Genome Valley’s scientific expertise and infrastructure will complement its existing technology and innovation site in Hyderabad.
Together, the two sites are expected to enable closer integration between wet-laboratory science and technology, supporting Amgen’s efforts to develop medicines.
“This new center reflects Amgen’s commitment to advancing scientific excellence, and India will be an important part of our global R&D network,” said Som Chattopadhyay, senior vice president of Global Business Solutions and national executive at Amgen.
Focus on discovery and precision medicine
The new centre will focus on scientific disciplines that sit at the heart of modern drug discovery.
Discovery chemistry will support the identification and development of potential drug candidates, while drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics will help scientists understand how medicines behave in the body.
Precision medicine will add another dimension by using scientific and technological capabilities to support more targeted approaches to treatment.
Amgen said the Hyderabad team will work with research sites across its global network rather than operate as an isolated research facility.
That global integration is central to the company’s strategy for the new centre.

Amgen said India will become an important part of its global R&D network through the Hyderabad expansion.
Naveen Gullapalli, managing director, Amgen India, said Hyderabad’s life-sciences ecosystem and STEM expertise would enable the company to apply advanced technologies at scale.
The Genome Valley centre will integrate biotechnology and digital innovation with the objective of serving more patients globally, he said.
The announcement also reflects the growing convergence of India’s pharmaceutical and technology capabilities.
