Hyderabad: In an era where climate resilience and ecological restoration have become central to sustainable development, Dr Priyanka Varghese, a 2003-batch Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer, has emerged as one of Telangana’s most accomplished environmental administrators. With over two decades of distinguished service, she has combined scientific expertise, technology-driven governance and grassroots participation to advance forest conservation and urban greening across the state.
Currently serving as Chief Conservator of Forests (IT & Working Plan) in the office of the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Telangana, Dr Varghese also serves as Secretary of the Telangana IFS Officers’ Association, where she continues to contribute to policy formulation and institutional strengthening.
An outstanding academic, Dr Varghese graduated with a B.Sc. in Forestry from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, earning a Gold Medal for academic excellence. She secured All India Rank 3 in the Indian Forest Service examination and later earned a Doctorate in Environmental Science from Osmania University, reflecting her strong foundation in both science and public administration.
Throughout her career, she has served as District Forest Officer in Adilabad, Karimnagar and Kamareddy, where she implemented several conservation, biodiversity and community forestry initiatives. Her administrative capabilities came into national prominence in 2014, when she was appointed Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Chief Minister’s Office to help steer the landmark Telangana Haritha Haram programme—one of India’s largest afforestation initiatives aimed at significantly increasing the state’s green cover.
Beyond state administration, Dr Varghese has contributed to environmental policymaking as an expert committee member for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the National Biodiversity Authority, bringing international perspectives to India’s conservation efforts.
Known for her hands-on leadership, she actively engages with students, academic institutions, civil society organisations and industry forums to promote environmental awareness, sustainable urban ecology and biodiversity conservation.
Dr Priyanka Varghese represents a new generation of public administrators who combine scientific knowledge with visionary governance. Her work continues to strengthen Telangana’s reputation as a leader in environmental sustainability, demonstrating how committed civil servants can transform ecological conservation into a people’s movement.
