Navy to commission indigenous multi-purpose vessel Samarthak on October 16
Built by Larsen & Toubro, Samarthak is the first of four multi-purpose vessels planned for induction, with roles spanning maritime patrol, unmanned systems support, trials and disaster relief.
Designed primarily for maritime surveillance and patrol, Samarthak can also undertake low-intensity maritime operations and serve as a platform for target deployment and trials.

NEW DELHI: The Indian Navy will commission the indigenous multi-purpose vessel Samarthak at Naval Base, Karwar, on October 16, 2026.
According to a Defence Ministry statement issued on October 13, the ship was built by Larsen & Toubro under the Make in India initiative and is the first of four multi-purpose vessels being inducted into the Navy.
Designed primarily for maritime surveillance and patrol, Samarthak can also undertake low-intensity maritime operations and serve as a platform for target deployment and trials.
Its additional roles include operating as a mothership for unmanned and autonomous systems, supporting humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, and undertaking salvage-related operations. The vessel can also be converted for limited hospital-ship duties.
The ship’s integrated combat suite includes indigenous sensors, weapons and electronic systems tailored for maritime operations, the statement said.
Samarthak’s crest depicts an Indian elephant emerging from the waves, symbolising strength, intelligence and agility. Its motto, “विजयार्थम् एकनिष्ठता”, translates as “Victory is Our Sole Aim”.
