New Delhi: Indian Railways has introduced a major passenger-friendly reform, allowing travellers to change their boarding point up to 30 minutes before the scheduled departure of a train, significantly enhancing flexibility in journey planning.

The revised rule, effective from April 1, 2026, permits passengers with confirmed or Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) tickets to modify their boarding station until the preparation of the second and final reservation chart, which is typically generated about 30 minutes before departure.

This marks a significant shift from the earlier system, where passengers were required to request a change at least 24 hours in advance, before the first reservation chart was prepared.

Railways officials said the change has been introduced in line with revised chart preparation timelines, as the first chart is now generally prepared 8–10 hours before departure, often on the previous night, making the earlier 24-hour rule restrictive for passengers.

Under the new provision, passengers can make last-minute adjustments to their boarding station without the need to cancel or rebook tickets, offering greater convenience, especially in cases of travel plan changes or delays in connecting journeys.

However, the facility is subject to certain conditions. The boarding point can be changed only once, and the updated station becomes final, requiring passengers to board the train from the revised location. The option is not available for waitlisted tickets.

The modification will be reflected in the second reservation chart, ensuring that seat allocation and onboard verification processes remain streamlined.

The move is part of Indian Railways’ broader push towards improving passenger experience and operational efficiency through digital systems and flexible policies. It is also expected to reduce instances of vacant berths caused by passengers failing to board from their original stations.

With increasing reliance on dynamic reservation systems and real-time data, the new rule aligns with the Railways’ efforts to make travel more responsive to passenger needs while optimising seat utilisation across the network.
