NEW DELHI: The Indian Navy received Amini, an indigenously designed and built Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC), from Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, on November 5, 2026.

The vessel is among the ASW shallow water craft designed and constructed by GRSE in accordance with the classification rules of the Indian Register of Shipping.

One of the largest Indian naval warships propelled by waterjets, Amini is equipped with lightweight torpedoes, indigenous rocket launchers and sonar systems. These capabilities enable the detection and engagement of underwater threats and are expected to strengthen the Navy’s anti-submarine warfare, coastal surveillance and mine-laying capabilities.

The ship takes its name from Amini Island in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep. It also carries forward the legacy of the erstwhile INS Amini, a Petya III-class anti-submarine warfare corvette that was decommissioned in 2002.

With more than 80% indigenous content, the vessel represents another milestone in the Indian Navy’s efforts to strengthen domestic warship construction and reduce dependence on imports.

Its delivery reinforces the Government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision and highlights the growing capabilities of India’s domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem.
