Telangana sets up TG-TMARS to strengthen traffic management and road, rail safety
New bureau to oversee traffic management, accident response and highway patrolling across the state
The bureau will function under the State Road Safety Council, headed by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, and will be headquartered in Hyderabad.
HYDERABAD: The Telangana government has established the Telangana Traffic Management, Road and Rail Safety Bureau (TG-TMARS) as a specialised police wing to bring traffic management, enforcement, highway patrolling and road-crash response under a common framework. The government issued G.O.Ms.No.135 on Thursday for the establishment of the bureau.
The bureau will function under the State Road Safety Council, headed by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, and will be headquartered in Hyderabad. It will be headed by an officer of the rank of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) or Inspector General of Police (IGP).
According to the government announcement, TG-TMARS will oversee traffic management across more than 32,000 km of state roads and the movement of more than 1.8 crore vehicles daily. Its mandate will also extend to metro rail and railway safety.
Focus on accident response
A key component of the new framework is the proposed appointment of a Road Accident Response Officer at every police station, with round-the-clock availability. The officers will be responsible for ensuring that accident victims are moved to hospitals promptly during the critical “golden hour”.
The government will also deploy Highway Patrolling Units equipped with speed detectors and advanced cameras for regular surveillance on the Outer Ring Road and highways spanning more than 50 km.
The move follows the state government’s earlier focus on data-driven traffic management and road-safety measures, including the use of real-time monitoring and surveillance through the Telangana Integrated Command and Control Centre.
40% of traffic-fine revenue for safety fund
The government has also created a dedicated Traffic Management Fund, with 40% of revenue generated from traffic fines to be allocated to the fund.
According to the announcement, the money will be used exclusively for staff training, advanced technology, patrol vehicles and emergency road repairs.
The establishment of TG-TMARS is intended to provide a unified institutional framework for traffic management, road safety, accident response and road and rail safety across Telangana.
