New Delhi: The National Test House (NTH), Northern Region, Ghaziabad, under the Department of Consumer Affairs, has established a state-of-the-art Shoe Testing Laboratory aimed at strengthening India’s footwear quality infrastructure and supporting manufacturers, exporters and MSMEs with advanced testing capabilities.

The upgraded facility is designed to provide comprehensive, reliable and high-precision testing services for a wide range of footwear products in accordance with relevant Indian Standards (IS).

Officials said the initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing India’s manufacturing competitiveness and improving quality assurance standards in the rapidly growing footwear sector.

The laboratory is equipped with modern testing instruments and advanced infrastructure capable of evaluating multiple categories of footwear, including safety and industrial shoes, school and leather footwear, PVC footwear, sandals and chappals, children’s footwear, sports footwear and specialised protective boots used in hazardous industrial environments.

The facility will conduct critical quality and performance tests related to durability, slip resistance, material strength, comfort and the presence of harmful chemicals and dyes to ensure compliance with domestic and international standards.

According to the Department of Consumer Affairs, the laboratory has been designed to offer accurate and timely testing services at affordable costs, particularly benefiting MSMEs and small-scale footwear manufacturers.

Strategically located in Ghaziabad near major footwear manufacturing clusters such as Delhi-NCR, Kanpur and Agra, the facility is expected to reduce logistics costs, improve ease of access and ensure faster sample testing for industry stakeholders in northern India.

Officials said the laboratory would play a key role in strengthening India’s national quality infrastructure by helping manufacturers meet stringent quality norms, improve export readiness and enhance global competitiveness of Indian footwear products.

The initiative is also expected to contribute towards greater consumer confidence by improving product reliability, safety and quality standards across the footwear industry.

The government said the project aligns with the broader objectives of the “Make in India” mission and the vision of “Viksit Bharat” by promoting manufacturing competitiveness, self-reliance and a stronger quality assurance ecosystem.
