Vedanta Expands Transgender Inclusion to 75 Employees Across Businesses

Gender affirmation support, housing access and structured policies anchor diversity push

New Delhi: Vedanta Limited has strengthened its workplace inclusion efforts, with 75 transgender employees currently engaged across its business verticals, marking a key milestone on International Transgender Day of Visibility.
The workforce spans multiple group companies including Vedanta Aluminium, Hindustan Zinc, Sesa Goa, FACOR and Cairn Oil & Gas, reflecting a steady expansion of diversity initiatives since 2022.
Transgender employees are deployed across mainstream roles such as operations, finance, commercial, logistics, CSR, HR, healthcare services and security. The company has also enabled internal mobility to support equitable career progression and deeper integration within business teams.
Vedanta has backed its hiring efforts with structured policies, including equal opportunity, anti-harassment and anti-discrimination frameworks, along with broader LGBTQIA+ inclusion measures. Specific provisions include a gender affirmation policy offering financial assistance of up to ₹2 lakh and 30 days of leave, housing support, financial aid of up to ₹1 lakh for higher education, and a structured buddy programme to support onboarding.
To address systemic challenges, the company has introduced gender-neutral washrooms across locations and expanded housing policies to include accommodation within company townships. These measures aim to mitigate barriers faced by transgender individuals in accessing rental housing due to social stigma.
The company has also partnered with organisations such as Periferry and National Network for Transgender Persons to support documentation, awareness and talent outreach.
Internal sensitisation programmes for employees, business partners and local communities are conducted regularly to foster acceptance. Initiatives such as “ZINCLUSION – Embracing Differences” led by Hindustan Zinc have further strengthened awareness by sharing lived experiences of members of the transgender community.
“I was initially apprehensive about being accepted, but the culture here is truly inclusive. From gender-sensitive policies to mental wellness sessions and unbiased hiring practices, I’ve consistently felt seen, respected, and empowered. My colleagues recognize me as an equal contributor, and this is a place where both my identity and expertise are genuinely valued. Hindustan Zinc’s support has not only helped me thrive but also enabled me advocate for others. It has been a truly transformative journey,” said a transgender employee working in Asset Integrity at Hindustan Zinc.
Vedanta said its approach focuses on creating meaningful employment opportunities while ensuring dignity, safety and long-term career growth, aligning inclusion with its broader organisational priorities.
