Mumbai, September 11: Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) has become the first Indian company to manufacture advanced naval 3D air surveillance radars under a transfer of technology agreement with Spanish defence major Indra. The first system, the Lanza-N—a naval variant of Indra’s long-range 3D radar—has been commissioned aboard an Indian Navy warship.

The Lanza-N radar, considered one of the most advanced air defence and anti-missile systems, has undergone rigorous sea trials involving multiple naval and aerial platforms before acceptance. It is now fully integrated with the ship’s systems. Additional units are being installed on Navy frigates, destroyers, and aircraft carriers.

A dedicated radar assembly, integration, and testing facility has already been set up at TASL’s Karnataka site to accelerate production and deliveries.

“Our collaboration with Indra reflects a shared commitment to strengthening radar manufacturing capabilities in India. By leveraging local supply chains and technical expertise, we are building a strong ecosystem for advanced defence technologies,” said Sukaran Singh, CEO & MD of Tata Advanced Systems.

Ana Buendía, Head of Indra’s Naval Business Unit, noted that the project goes beyond supplying radars. “Together with TASL, we have established a radar factory in Bengaluru, enabling us to produce systems more efficiently and offer closer service to the Indian Navy,” she said.

The Lanza-N system is designed to detect both friendly and hostile air and surface targets, including drones, supersonic fighters, and anti-radiation missiles. This is the first time the radar has been deployed outside Spain.

The milestone is being hailed as a significant step in India’s quest for defence self-reliance, underlining the country’s growing capability to build next-generation military technologies indigenously.
