Kochi: The Indian Navy hosted the IONS Maritime Exercise (IMEX) TTX 2026 at the Maritime Warfare Centre under the Southern Naval Command in Kochi, bringing together naval representatives from across the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) to address emerging maritime security challenges.
The exercise saw participation from multiple member countries of the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium, including Bangladesh, France, Indonesia, Kenya, Maldives, Mauritius, Myanmar, Seychelles, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, and Timor-Leste, reflecting growing regional cooperation in maritime security.
Conducted in a simulated environment, the tabletop exercise focused on non-traditional maritime threats, including challenges related to trade routes, energy flows, and regional connectivity – critical aspects of the IOR’s strategic importance.
Officials said the exercise aimed to enhance operational coordination, information sharing, and decision-making mechanisms among participating navies. It also served to test and refine existing IONS frameworks and maritime security guidelines through scenario-based discussions.
The event assumes added significance as India prepares to take over the IONS Chairmanship for the 2026–2028 cycle, marking its return to a leadership role in the grouping after 16 years.
By simulating complex, multi-scenario contingencies without live deployment constraints, IMEX TTX 2026 enabled deeper professional exchanges and strengthened mutual trust among participating nations.
The exercise reaffirmed IONS as a key platform for collective maritime security, regional stability, and collaborative problem-solving, with insights expected to contribute to a more coordinated and resilient maritime ecosystem in the Indian Ocean Region.
