New Delhi, July 23: Following the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar as the Vice President of India, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has initiated the process to conduct the Vice-Presidential Election 2025, as mandated under Article 324 of the Constitution.

The resignation was formally notified by the Ministry of Home Affairs through Gazette Notification S.O. 3354(E) dated July 22, 2025. The ECI is entrusted with the responsibility of conducting elections to the offices of the President and Vice President under the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952 and the corresponding Rules of 1974.

Preparatory Activities Underway

The ECI has begun the groundwork for the election process, including:

  • Compilation of the Electoral College, which includes both elected and nominated members of the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha.
  • Finalisation of the Returning Officer and Assistant Returning Officers for the election.
  • Preparation and dissemination of background material related to past Vice-Presidential elections to ensure smooth execution of procedures.

The Commission stated that the official election schedule will be announced soon after completion of preparatory formalities.
