EC Notifies Schedule for Vice-Presidential Election 2025; Polling on September 9 if Needed

New Delhi, August 7: The Election Commission of India on Thursday officially notified the schedule for the Vice-Presidential Election 2025, with the polling—if required – scheduled to take place on September 9, 2025, from 10 am to 5 pm across designated polling locations.

As per the notification published in the Gazette of India (Extraordinary), the timeline for the election process is as follows:

  • Last date for filing nominations: August 21, 2025
  • Scrutiny of nominations: August 22, 2025
  • Last date for withdrawal of candidatures: August 25, 2025
  • Date of poll (if necessary): September 9, 2025

The Commission has appointed PC Mody, Secretary-General of the Rajya Sabha, as the Returning Officer for the election. Garima Jain (Joint Secretary) and Vijay Kumar (Director), both from the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, will serve as Assistant Returning Officers.

Key Instructions for Candidates

  • Nomination papers must be submitted in person by the candidate or their proposer/seconders to the Returning Officer in Room No. RS-28, Parliament House, New Delhi, between 11 am and 3 pm, on working days (excluding public holidays), no later than August 21, 2025.
  • Each nomination must be accompanied by:
    • A certified copy of the candidate’s entry in the electoral roll of the parliamentary constituency in which they are registered.
    • A deposit of ₹15,000, either in cash at the time of nomination or pre-deposited in the RBI or government treasury (with the original receipt enclosed).
  • Forms of nomination papers can be obtained from the same office during the specified hours.
  • The scrutiny of nomination papers will take place at Room No. F-100, Sangoshthi-2, First Floor, Parliament House on August 22, 2025, at 11 am.
  • Withdrawal of candidature must be submitted in writing by the candidate or an authorized representative before 3 pm on August 25, 2025.

Public Accessibility and Queries

For guidance and clarifications during the nomination period, the Returning Officer PC Mody will be available at Room No. RS 08, Parliament House, from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm on all working days (including Saturdays), from August 9 to August 16, 2025, excluding public holidays.

The notification and public notice will also be published in the official gazettes of all States and Union Territories to ensure nationwide dissemination.

The Vice-Presidential Election, conducted by the Election Commission under the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952, is decided by an electoral college comprising members of both Houses of Parliament.
