New Delhi, August 6: The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, on Tuesday approved capital acquisition proposals worth approximately ₹67,000 crore to significantly upgrade the operational capabilities of India’s armed forces.
In a major step toward self-reliance and modernization, the DAC granted Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for several procurement and upgrade initiatives across the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
Indian Army
The council approved the procurement of Thermal Imager-based Driver Night Sights for BMP infantry combat vehicles, enhancing night driving capability and ensuring superior mobility for the Mechanised Infantry, especially in low-visibility combat environments.
Indian Navy
Key approvals for the Navy include:
- Compact Autonomous Surface Craft for anti-submarine warfare, enhancing threat detection and neutralisation.
- BrahMos Fire Control Systems and Launchers, bolstering the Navy’s strike power.
- Upgrade of the BARAK-1 Point Defence Missile System, to improve short-range air defence.
Indian Air Force
To bolster aerial surveillance and defence:
- AoN was granted for Mountain Radars, enhancing real-time air surveillance along mountainous borders.
- The SAKSHAM/SPYDER Weapon System will be upgraded to integrate with the Integrated Air Command and Control System, improving air defence coordination.
Tri-Services Capability
The DAC also approved procurement of Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPAs) for the Army, Navy, and Air Force. These advanced drones can carry multiple payloads and weapons, enabling long-range, long-duration missions for surveillance and strike.
Fleet Sustenance and Maintenance
AoN was accorded for:
- Sustenance of C-17 and C-130J fleets, ensuring continued strategic airlift capabilities.
- Comprehensive Annual Maintenance Contract for the S-400 Long Range Air Defence Missile System, guaranteeing reliability and readiness of this critical asset.
These acquisitions are aligned with India’s commitment to enhance indigenous defence manufacturing under the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative while strengthening the nation’s combat preparedness.
