New Delhi, August 18: India’s coal sector is undergoing rapid digital transformation as public sector undertakings (PSUs) adopt advanced IT-based systems to enhance efficiency, improve safety, and curb illegal mining, Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

Coal India Limited (CIL), the country’s largest coal producer, has deployed an Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) for 24×7 electronic surveillance, along with an Operator Independent Truck Dispatch System to optimise coal movement. Other initiatives include an e-MB and e-Billing portal, a Centralised Safety Information System, Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring, and the Digicoal transformation project that leverages data-driven insights. The company has also rolled out ERP systems and is using the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan to optimise transportation routes.

The government-backed Khanan Prahari mobile app and Coal Mines Surveillance & Management System (CMSMS) have empowered citizens to report illegal mining activities in real-time, enabling quicker action by law enforcement agencies.

The Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) has implemented SAP ERP systems, GPS-based vehicle tracking, CCTV surveillance, and Operator Independent Truck Dispatch Systems, alongside limited use of drones for monitoring. Similarly, NLC India Limited has introduced geo-fencing technologies, a Digital Logistics Management System (DLMS) for secure coal dispatch, and 3D laser scanning with GNSS receivers for precise volume measurements.

“These initiatives reflect the coal sector’s transition towards smarter, technology-enabled operations, helping ensure transparency, real-time monitoring, and better compliance,” Reddy said.

The ministry in a statement said the measures align with the government’s broader push to digitise critical sectors, reduce leakages, and make mining operations more sustainable while supporting India’s growing energy needs.
