New Delhi, September 17: The Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), NITI Aayog, has achieved a historic milestone as its flagship initiative Mega Tinkering Day 2025 entered both the India Book of Records and the Asia Book of Records for the maximum number of students participating in a tinkering activity in a single day.

On August 12, 2025, a record 4,73,350 students from 9,467 Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL) schools across India simultaneously designed solutions for Swachh Bharat by building DIY vacuum cleaners. The activity was guided by a live, step-by-step online instructional session. The achievement was formally announced on September 15 by the record-certifying bodies.

Calling the recognition a “movement, not just a record,” AIM Mission Director Deepak Bagla said, “This initiative reflects the Prime Minister’s vision of Viksit Bharat, where innovation and youth power form the bedrock of India’s growth story. Through Atal Tinkering Labs, we are equipping students not only with technical skills but also with the mindset to dream big, think differently, and solve real-world challenges.”

The nationwide event reached schools across frontier regions such as Leh, Ladakh, Kargil, and Kashmir, aspirational districts like Virudhunagar, and remote corners from Manipur and Mizoram to Kanniyakumari and Bhuj. The wide reach underscored AIM’s ability to unite students across geographic and infrastructural divides in a shared culture of innovation.

Since inception, AIM has established 10,000+ Atal Tinkering Labs, giving students hands-on exposure to technologies including 3D printing, robotics, IoT, and electronics. These labs nurture problem-solving, design thinking, and entrepreneurial skills, preparing young innovators to drive India’s transformation in the decades ahead.
