NEW DELHI: The Coal Controller Organisation has developed SUVIKALP, a digital decision-support tool to help stakeholders identify suitable projects for repurposing post-mining land.

The Ministry of Coal, in a statement issued on Wednesday, said the in-house tool evaluates and ranks potential projects using technical, environmental, social and economic criteria.

Once an option is selected, users can explore implementation through PRISM, a supporting model offering project concepts, case studies, sample detailed project reports, tender documents and information on relevant agencies.

SUVIKALP received the SKOCH Gold Award 2026 in the digital operational efficiency and data-driven decision-making category on September 26.

CCO also conducted 12 thematic webinars under its SUVIKALP Samvaad series, bringing together coal companies, officials, researchers and technical experts. Discussions covered community participation, livelihoods, tourism, financing and alternative uses for abandoned mine voids.

The ministry said the initiatives aim to move mine-closure planning beyond compliance towards ecological restoration, employment and diversified local economies, helping turn closed mines into productive assets.
