TRAI Reports 121.8 Crore Telecom Subscribers in Q1 FY2025; Internet Users Cross 1 Billion

New Delhi, September 3: India’s telecom subscriber base rose to 1,218.36 million (121.83 crore) by the end of June 2025, according to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI)’s Indian Telecom Services Performance Indicator Report for April–June 2025. The report highlights continued growth in both internet and wireline services, alongside rising revenues in the sector.

Internet and Broadband Expansion

The total number of internet subscribers increased to 1,002.85 million from 969.10 million in March, marking a quarterly growth rate of 3.48%. Of this, broadband subscribers accounted for 979.71 million, while narrowband users declined to 23.14 million. Wireless internet users remain dominant at 958.14 million, while wired internet subscribers stood at 44.71 million.

Wireline Revival

Wireline connections grew sharply, rising from 37.04 million in March to 47.49 million in June — a 28.20% quarterly jump and 35.26% year-on-year growth. Wireline tele-density also increased from 2.62% to 3.36% in the same period.

Revenue and ARPU Trends

Gross revenue for the telecom sector stood at ₹96,646 crore during the quarter, down 1.63% from March. However, Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) increased 2.65% quarter-on-quarter to ₹81,325 crore. Wireless monthly average revenue per user (ARPU) climbed 2% to ₹186.62, with prepaid users at ₹187 and postpaid at ₹182.72. Year-on-year, ARPU registered an 18.52% growth.

Subscriber Base and Tele-density

The total wireless subscriber base reached 1,170.88 million, including 7.85 million 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) users. Urban subscribers rose to 679.86 million, while rural users reached 538.50 million. National tele-density improved to 86.09%, with urban tele-density at 133.56% and rural at 59.43%.

Broadcasting and Cable Sector

As of June 2025, India had 912 permitted private satellite TV channels, of which 333 were pay TV channels. The pay DTH sector had 56.07 million active subscribers across four operators. Additionally, 388 private FM radio channels operated in 113 cities, while 540 community radio stations were active nationwide.
