New Delhi, January 7: Tata Advanced Systems has been awarded a supply order by the Indian Army for the overhaul-cum-upgradation of in-service first-generation Pinaka Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS) and Battery Command Posts (BCPs), marking a significant public–private partnership in India’s defence sustainment ecosystem.

The supply order was formally handed over to Tata Advanced Systems by the Indian Army during a ceremony held in New Delhi. Under the programme, Tata Advanced Systems will support the Army’s 510 Advance Base Workshop (ABW) in undertaking the overhaul and upgradation of the frontline artillery systems to ensure sustained operational availability and peak performance.

In the initial phase, Tata Advanced Systems and 510 ABW will jointly carry out a pilot overhaul of select Pinaka MLRS units and BCPs. Following the successful completion of this phase, the remaining systems will be overhauled by 510 ABW of the Corps of EME, with Tata Advanced Systems providing certified spares, quality assurance and technical support. The collaboration will leverage the company’s technical expertise and close coordination with original equipment manufacturers.

Pinaka MLRS was designed and developed through a long-standing collaboration between Tata Advanced Systems and the Defence Research and Development Organisation. The system has achieved nearly 80 per cent indigenous content, reflecting a high degree of self-reliance and operational autonomy in defence manufacturing. Tata Advanced Systems has supplied a significant number of Pinaka systems, which are currently deployed with the Indian Army, strengthening its land combat systems portfolio.

Mounted on an 8×8 high-mobility vehicle, the Pinaka MLRS features automated shoot-and-scoot capability for rapid deployment and survivability in challenging terrain. It is equipped with a microprocessor-based all-electric servo drive system and an inertial navigation system-enabled digital control and positioning architecture, enabling net-centric operations and precise targeting. The launcher currently fires Pinaka Mk-I rockets and can be upgraded to fire guided rockets with different warheads. Ongoing development efforts are focused on guided variants with extended ranges of up to 120 km and 300 km.

Tata Advanced Systems has been associated with the Pinaka programme since 1989 and secured a landmark contract in 2006 for the second Pinaka regiment, followed by repeat orders in 2016 and a major contract in 2020 for additional regiments. Systems supplied to early regiments have benefited from progressive upgrades in subsequent production batches, enhancing commonality and performance.

A wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Sons, Tata Advanced Systems is a key player in India’s aerospace and defence sector, offering integrated solutions across aerostructures, airborne platforms, defence and security, and land mobility. The company maintains strategic partnerships with global aerospace and defence firms and plays a growing role in strengthening India’s indigenous defence capabilities.
