New Delhi, August 17: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated two major National Highway projects in Delhi, the Dwarka Expressway (Delhi section) and the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II), together built at a cost of nearly ₹11,000 crore. The projects are expected to significantly decongest the capital, improve mobility, and boost connectivity across Delhi-NCR.

Speaking at Rohini after the inauguration, Modi said the projects represent Delhi’s transformation into a “model of growth” for a developing India. “The constant endeavour is to ease people’s lives, a goal that guides every policy and every decision. For us, reform means the expansion of good governance,” he remarked.

The Prime Minister announced that next-generation GST reforms will soon be rolled out to provide “double benefits” for citizens during the upcoming festive season. He added that the government’s long-term focus is on simplifying taxes, promoting transparency, and ensuring benefits reach the poor and middle class.

Drawing on the symbolism of Janmashtami, Modi invoked “Chakradhari Mohan” (Lord Krishna) and “Charkhadhari Mohan” (Mahatma Gandhi) as inspirations for India’s journey towards strength and self-reliance. “To make India stronger, we must draw inspiration from Chakradhari Mohan; to make India self-reliant, we must follow the path of Charkhadhari Mohan. Let us be vocal for local, let us trust and buy products made in India,” he urged.

Highway Projects at a Glance

  • Dwarka Expressway (Delhi Section, 10.1 km; ₹5,360 crore): Connects Shiv Murti intersection to the Delhi-Haryana border, with multi-modal links to Yashobhoomi, DMRC metro lines, the upcoming Bijwasan railway station, and Dwarka bus depot.
  • Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II, Alipur to Dichaon Kalan, 38 km incl. spurs; ₹5,580 crore): Provides direct access to Bahadurgarh and Sonipat, easing traffic on Delhi’s Inner/Outer Ring Roads and key junctions like Mukarba Chowk and Dhaula Kuan, while improving industrial connectivity and freight movement in NCR.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the use of millions of tonnes of waste material from landfill sites in constructing the UER-II, linking the project to the government’s push for sustainable development.

Underscoring Delhi’s infrastructural transformation, he pointed to new expressways, the expanding metro network, the Namo Bharat rapid rail, and the rollout of over 650 electric buses under the “Green Delhi–Clean Delhi” initiative.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, Delhi Lt. Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini were among those present at the event.
