Museum to showcase Assam’s artistic legacy, featuring the Vrindavani Vastra, and promote global cultural exchange under a JSW–Assam partnership
Mumbai/Guwahati, Nov 12: The JSW Group and the Government of Assam have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish a state-of-the-art heritage museum in Guwahati, dedicated to the preservation and celebration of Assam’s art, culture, and heritage. The upcoming museum, to be built on a 45,000-square-foot site at Sericulture Farm, Khanapara, will be fully funded and constructed by the JSW Group.
The museum aims to serve as a global cultural hub, hosting national and international artefacts, travelling exhibitions, and collaborations that strengthen cross-cultural understanding. Its inaugural exhibition will feature the Vrindavani Vastra — the 17th-century devotional textile woven under the spiritual guidance of Srimanta Sankardev, currently preserved at the British Museum, London.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the initiative, calling it a major milestone in the state’s cultural roadmap. “The museum will be a source of immense pride for our state. It will not only bring the sacred Vrindavani Vastra home but also offer a world-class space to showcase Assamese art and heritage alongside global exhibitions. We thank the JSW Group and Mrs. Sangita Jindal for collaborating with us on this unique cultural endeavor,” he said.
Sangita Jindal, Chairperson of the JSW Foundation, said the museum underscores JSW’s longstanding belief in art and culture as instruments of social inspiration. “Through this collaboration, JSW is honoured to support the Government of Assam in creating a museum that preserves India’s cultural heritage while enabling global engagement. The museum will stand as a testament to our shared heritage and artistic devotion,” she added.
Equipped with advanced climate-control systems, digitized archives, and high-end security infrastructure, the museum will meet international standards for conservation and curation. The project symbolizes a long-term partnership between the JSW Group and the Government of Assam, reinforcing their shared commitment to preserving India’s artistic treasures and promoting global appreciation of Assamese culture.
