New Delhi, August 7: The Department of Space is progressing steadily on India’s third satellite launch pad project, with commissioning of the new facility at Sriharikota of Andhra Pradesh targeted for March 2029, the government informed the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

In a written reply, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, Dr Jitendra Singh, stated that financial sanction for the project was granted in March 2025. Since then, geotechnical investigations and topographical surveys were completed by May 2025.

The project will be executed through multiple work packages, with four major milestones already identified:

  • Completion of civil works by May 2028
  • Establishment of fluid systems and propellant storage by July 2028
  • Installation of launch pad facilities by September 2028
  • Commissioning of the facility by March 2029

To promote Make-in-India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives, the Department of Space plans to partner with Indian private players and MSMEs through a competitive tendering process. Final details of these collaborations will be available post-bidding and contract placement.

The new facility is expected to enhance India’s launch capabilities significantly and support the growing needs of both government and private space missions.
