New Delhi, September 29:: The Department of Financial Services (DFS), Ministry of Finance, in collaboration with the Mediation and Conciliation Project Committee (MCMP) of the Supreme Court of India, on Sunday concluded a 40-hour mediation training programme for presiding officers of Debt Recovery Tribunals (DRTs) and senior executives of public sector banks.

The programme, held from September 24 to 28 at the Supreme Court’s Additional Building Complex, aimed to strengthen dispute resolution capacity within the financial sector. Mediation, internationally recognised as an effective alternative dispute resolution (ADR) tool, was the central focus of the training.

Key modules covered included the concept and process of mediation, differences between judicial proceedings and ADR mechanisms, stages of mediation, and the role of mediators. Sessions also addressed communication techniques, negotiation and bargaining strategies, and the responsibilities of referral judges, lawyers, and parties. Special emphasis was placed on cases adjudicated under the Recovery of Debts and Bankruptcy (RDB) Act, 1993 and the SARFAESI Act, 2002.

Participants expressed satisfaction with the breadth of topics and appreciated the DFS and MCMP for organizing a comprehensive programme tailored to the needs of financial dispute resolution.

The initiative reflects a growing emphasis on mediation as a means to achieve quicker, cost-effective, and consensus-driven outcomes in the banking and financial sector.
