New Delhi, September 23: Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan on Monday inaugurated the first edition of the Tri Services Academia Technology Symposium (T-SATS) at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi. The two-day event seeks to forge stronger synergy between the Armed Forces and academia to develop niche, futuristic technologies tailored to India’s defence requirements.

The symposium brought together directors, heads of departments, and students from 62 institutions including IISc, IITs, IIITs, private technology institutes, and premier R&D bodies.

Call for Indigenous Innovation

In his address, General Chauhan underlined the evolving character of modern warfare, where kinetic and non-kinetic domains converge, demanding advanced integrated technological solutions. He stressed the vital role of academia, startups, and industry in strengthening indigenous defence capabilities across platforms, weapons, and networks. “A whole-of-nation approach is needed to make India a global leader in next-generation defence technologies,” he said.

Showcasing Academic Innovation

A technology exhibition featuring 43 innovative projects by academia was inaugurated, with subject matter experts from the three Services evaluating their military potential. Promising projects will be considered for collaborative R&D and future funding.

The symposium also hosted 95 structured One-on-One meetings between innovators and Service representatives, enabling direct pitching of R&D proposals and guidance on converting ideas into deployable solutions. These sessions will continue on September 23.

MoUs Signed

Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed with several leading academic institutions including IIT Madras, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, MS Ramaiah University, Gujarat National Law University, Nirma University, Oriental Institute of Science and Technology, Rashtriya Raksha University, Ajeenkya DY Patil University, and the National Research Development Corporation.

Towards a Strategic Partnership

Themed “Vivek va Anusandhan se Vijay” (Victory through Wisdom and Research), T-SATS marks a significant step towards institutionalising defence-focused research frameworks. Sessions during the day highlighted operational challenges, future technology needs, and the importance of mission-driven collaborations between academia and the Armed Forces.

Officials said the symposium aims to harness India’s intellectual and technical capital to co-create future-ready solutions, thereby enhancing national security and defence preparedness.
