Defence Ministry signs ₹770-crore radar procurement contract with BEL
The improved lightweight radars will detect and track fighter-sized aircraft and mini and micro drones, helping the Indian Army identify priority aerial targets and strengthen air defence.

NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Defence has signed a contract worth approximately ₹770 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to procure Improved Low Level Light Weight Radars, designated LLLR-I, for the Indian Army.
The contract was signed in New Delhi on October 21 in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.
The radar system can detect and track fighter-sized targets as well as mini and micro drones. It can also prioritise aerial targets, helping the Army respond to threats from unmanned aerial systems, according to a ministry statement.
The ministry said the procurement would advance the indigenisation of air defence platforms and support India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem, including micro, small and medium enterprises.
It linked the acquisition to the government’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision and efforts to build a self-reliant and globally competitive defence industry.
